Our Mission

The mission of St. Emmelia Homeschooling Services is to blend the warmth of home with a rich, family-style education where children can develop a lifelong love of learning.

Our namesake is Saint Emmelia of Cesarea, a devout 4th century Christian and mother of 10 children, five of whom became canonized saints in the Orthodox church. She is our inspiration as we teach our own children, whom God has entrusted to us.

Values & Beliefs

  • The Child as an Icon of God: Each child is viewed as a sacred person with innate dignity and purpose, made in God’s image. We honor their individuality while guiding them toward growth, self-discipline, and virtue.

  • Formation of the Whole Person:

    • Mind: through living ideas and structured learning

    • Heart: through beauty, story, and moral guidance

    • Body: through movement, healthy meals, and practical tasks

    • Spirit: through prayer, gratitude, and sacred rhythm

  • Beauty, Truth, and Goodness: Children are shaped by what surrounds them. We emphasize simple spaces, natural materials, meaningful art and music, and inspiring literature to awaken each child’s sense of wonder.

  • Rhythm and Variety: Predictable daily and seasonal rhythms create a sense of security, while variety encourages student engagement.

  • Living Learning: We prioritize rich, meaningful experiences as well as memorization. Children encounter ideas through:

    • Storytelling & read-alouds

    • Songs and Chants

    • Nature Study & Hands-on exploration

    • Thoughtful conversation

  • Our Christian Foundation: Our program is shaped by the life and teachings of the Orthodox Church. While we warmly welcome families from various traditions, our environment reflects Orthodox practices and worldview. Children will experience age-appropriate daily prayers, Scriptural principles woven gently into the day, exposure to holy days and seasonal rhythms, and songs, stories and language that reflect Christian tradition. These practices are offered with gentleness and respect, focusing on spiritual formation rather than formal theological instruction. Conversations about spiritual matters are organic, happening throughout the day.

  • The Role of the Educator: We believe that the teacher serves as a guide and model, offering warm authority, clear expectations, gentle discipline, attentive care ,and encouraging presence. We believe children thrive when they feel safe, seen, and guided with consistency and love.
